What Are Mad Libs?

Mad Libs are a phrasal template word game where one player prompts others for a list of words to substitute for blanks in a story before reading it aloud. Mad Libs are a great party game to break the ice with and they are just really fun.

Mad Libs provide not only a fun activity but also a creative way to practice parts of speech and develop language skills.

How To Play Mad Libs

To play, simply print out our Easter Mad Lib and ask your participants to fill in the blanks with words corresponding to the parts of speech indicated, without letting them see the context of the story.

Once all the blanks are filled, read the story aloud. The random words inserted into the blanks will create funny and unexpected stories that are so ridiculous that you can’t help but laugh.

Parts of Speech for Fill-in-the-Blanks

Here are some parts of speech you’ll encounter in our Easter Mad Lib, along with their definitions to help you pick the perfect words:

  • Noun: A person, place, thing, or idea (e.g., bunny, garden, chocolate).
  • Verb: An action word (e.g., hop, find, eat).
  • Adjective: A word that describes a noun (e.g., colorful, fluffy, sweet).
  • Adverb: A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb, often ending in -ly (e.g., quickly, happily, brightly).
